Plans for a railway station at Foleshill serving the Coventry Arena now appear dead after the Strategic Rail Authority refused to back the scheme.
Council Chief Ken Taylor whose Conservative Party were against the Arena until they were elected to power last May said: "We all think it is absolutely crazy. "We've got the money to build this station and were going to support it while it got off the ground.
"Now we are being told,by the S.R.A. in the main that there is no way they are going to allow the station to happen."
Defending the actions,an S.R.A. spokesman said: "For health and safety reasons, it wouldn not be feasible for the station to cope with the surge in demand that would have coincided with an event at the Arena.
"Similarly, the demand would have dropped so significantly during the periods that the Arena was not holding an event, that it would not have justifed services stopping at the station."
