Coventry City have unveiled a new badge (pictured on top of page). City who again opted not to consult the supporters on this issued a press statement on their website saying: "With a brand new era set to commence for Coventry City Football Club, the Club is marking the move to the Arena with a new badge. As with previous designs, the badge incorporates an image of an elephant, which was originally introduced when Coventry City became the ‘Sky Blues’ under Jimmy Hill in 1962.
However, this did not appear on the shirts until the 1969/70 season. The new crest also adopts a modern shield design as Coventry City look to the future ahead of the Club’s move to their brand new 32,000-seater home.
Said Chairman Mike McGinnity: “We feel that with the move to the Arena this summer, Coventry City Football Club is making strides forward and it is an ideal time to introduce a new badge.
“Our existing crest has been in use for over 20 years and while it symbolises much of the tradition of our past, we felt that a change was needed to symbolise our future.
“This was not a decision we arrived at lightly and we are aware of how much the badge means to our supporters. I hope that given time, they will take this new design to their hearts.”
The new badge will begin to appear on Club literature immediately and will be phased in completely by the time the Sky Blues play their first game at the Arena in August. It will also feature on the 2005-06 playing kit."
