Coventry City Council leader John Mutton and MP Bob Ainsworth has admitted that a railway station at the Ricoh Arena won't be up and in running in time for the football matches the stadium is hosting in the 2012 Olympics.

According to the CT, Transport Secretary Phillip Hammond has confirmed that there will be more delays to the proposed NUCKLE (Nuneaton, Coventry, Kenilworth, Leamington) project of which Phase One involves building a train station at the home of Coventry City.

The NUCKLE scheme which requires £12m of government funding now needs "further appraisal" before a decision on whether the plans for the scheme can be approved in January 2011 and then if it passed this stage, the scheme would be subject to 'a view to allocating funding at the end of 2011' .

Coventry City Council leader John Mutton and MP Bob Ainsworth both told the CT, that this would be too late and mean that the station was not built in time for the 2012 Olympics.

"This is a major disappointment. The station won't be ready for Olympic football under this time scale," said John Mutton to the CT. "If it's put forward for the development stage in January, funds should be made available immediately."
