Atherstone Chairman Issues Apology After Cup Trouble

The Chairman of Atherstone Town issued an apology to the travelling Barrow fans after their FA Cup Third Qualifying Round tie was marred by crowd violence.

The Adders, the lowest place side in the competiition were 4-0 down at half time when Atherstone 'fans', according to reports, started attacking the Barrow substitutes and their supporters.

There were reports of "Flares were also thrown into the Barrow support while a flag was stolen and set on fire. Women and children targeted as well."

There was a delay of between twelve to twenty minutes depending on who you believe and the police were called before a subdued second half started.

Atherstone Town Chairman Rob Weale told BBC Cumbria: "I am personally embarrassed about the scenes here at half-time

 "It was unacceptable, obviously we will be pursuing the perpetrators."

 He added: "We will work alongside the security officers, the referees and the police and those people responsible will feel the full force of the law.

 "The situation was defused as quickly as possible, the police came into take control but once it has happened it has happened and I apologise to the Barrow fans."
