Coventry City supporting boxer Steve Bendall was beaten tonight at the York Hall in Bethnall Green,London by Barnet's Darren Barker in a Commonwealth Middleweight Championship fight.
Tile Hill born Bendall, who again fought in his Sky Blue trunks, took on Barker in a twelve round contest.
Watched by a good turn out of Coventrians and supporters from Bournemouth where he now lives, Bendall, weighed in at 11 stone five with home boxer a pound lighter.
Bendall started with a couple of rights but was down within twenty seconds from a right from Barker to the chin. Referee Richard Davies from London knew that the Southpaw was ok to continue and he regained his composure but lost the opening round 10-8.
Bendall was worked well by Barker who threw some handy scoring combination shots in the second.
The third was a tight round with both boxers slowing the pace down. Bendall,to his credit, counter-punched at every opportunity.
Into the fourth and Bendall got in some good punches to the the head whilst the locals asked "Where the f** Is Coventry?", to win the round.
Bendall withstood a good head shot early in the fifth and fought back with two of his own. Barker connected with a headshot which had the home crowd on his feet and did enough to win the round.
Round Six saw Barker take the fight to Bendall who relied on jabs to the head.
Barker won that round and the seventh saw Bendall, who was cut to the right eye from a clash of heads, work the body but not get through with any telling shots.
The cut to the top of his eye lid was enough to stop the fight in the seventh round and give Barker the victory.
