The first period had been goal-less but in the second, Cardiff took the lead on 30.19 when Paul Bissonnette scored, assisted by Mac Faulkener.
A minute and four seconds later, it was two when Adam Harding found the net with assists for Josh Batch and Devin DiDiomete.
Greg Leeb pulled one back for Coventry on 36.10, assisted by Mike Schutte but Cardiff restored their two goal margin on 37.57 when Stuart Macrae, assisted by Phil Hill and Ben Davies.
Cardiff added a fourth on 55.58 with a powerplay goal from Stuart Macrae, assisted by Chris Blight and Paul Bissonnette and Brad Leeb pulled one back with an unassisted goal on 57.19, before Cardiff hit a fifth with Chris Blight who scored an empty net goal on 59.02, assisted by Mac Faulkener.
