Coventry Blaze Ice Hockey Club failed to progress to the Super Final in Minsk with a 7-3 defeat to hosts Rouen Dragons in their final Continental Cup match.
Having put six goals past Leipajas and Cracovia in the past two days, the Blaze needed to beat or get to over-time after Cracovia Krakow beat Leipajas 7-5 in the early game in order to book their place in the next stage of the Super Final in Minsk.
Backed by close to 300 fans in Rouen, the Blaze took to the ice in their Sky Blue kit and pressed the Rouen Dragons, who had lost to the Polish team early on.
Unfortunately, they could not make their advantage count and two powerplay goals from Guenette in the 11th minute and Bergstrom two minutes later saw Rouen two goals up before Russ Cowley found the net assisted by Owen Fussy a minute later.
Da Costa put Rouen back in front in the 16th minute before Sean Selsmer made the most of some excellent stick work from Brad Cruickshank to tap in on 17 minutes to make it 2-3 at the end of the first period.
Both net minders made good saves before Janil increased Rouen's lead with a fourth goal in the 26th minute and then another short-handed goal from Thinel in the 31st minute, made the Blaze's job of getting some back from the match even more difficult.
Jon Weaver smashed home a third for Coventry in the 36th minute but before the second period ended and with the Blaze having three men on the ice against Rouen's five, the home side scored a sixth goal through Desrosiers.
In the final period, the Blaze gave away too many penalties to have any hope of getting back in the match and a fourth power play goal of the game for Rouen scored by Olsson in the 50th minute finished off the match.
Next Sunday, The Blaze are at home to Braehead Clan. Face off is at 6pm.
