Blaze See Off The Panthers

Coventry Blaze went five points clear at the top of the Elite League table with a 5-3 victory against Nottingham Panthers tonight.

At a packed Sky Dome tonight, Coventry took the lead on 3.21 when Greg Chambers slammed home for an unassisted goal.

Nottingham who arrived in Coventry, second in the Elite League table, equalised on 4.09 through Jade Gailbraith and five minutes later, David Clarke netted to put them in front.

Greg Owen, who hit a hat-trick in the 4-3 victory at Edinburgh last night, had the Blaze back level on 13.53 when he scored, assisted by Chambers.

Into the second and with less than two minutes gone, Coventry hit their third goal of the evening when Danny Stewart fired home a short handed goal assisted by Russ Cowley.

However, that was cancelled out by Cameron Mann netting on 26.44 with a power play goal.

Things were pretty even but tonight the Blaze were not to be denied. Brad Cruickshank hit the fourth with a powerplay goal, assisted by Chambers on 45.40 and with 31 seconds left, an immense victory was confirmed when Russ Cowley, assisted by Dan Carlson and Jason Robinson scored to give The Blaze a deserved 5-3 victory.

Other Elite League scores were Cardiff 0-1 Edinburgh, Hull 5-3 Newcastle and Sheffield 4-3 Belfast.

On Saturday, it's an away game at Belfast before the Blaze take on Sheffield Steelers at the Sky Dome next Sunday.
