Coventry City Ladies moved to the top of the Womens Premier League Northern Division after an impressive 2-0 victory away from home against local rivals Aston Villa.
Strikes from Kirsty Robson and Helen Dermody contributed towards a comfortable victory for the Sky Blues, but First Team Coach Paul Cudby is not getting carried away with his team's current league position and remains focused on the season's objective.
"Everyone wanted to beat Villa so the result was really pleasing. It was a professional performance and throughout the match we looked both solid and dangerous when going forward.
We were magnificent. I can't single out any player because it was such a superb team performance, they all did terrific and I was really impressed with what I saw.
He added: "The result puts us top of the league, but we will be keeping our firmly on the ground at the minute. We will enjoy the moment but then it's back to training and concentrating on our next match against Derby County next Sunday.
Before the start of the play, the Sky Blues knew that because no other league fixtures were being played, a win would put them top of the Premier League North Division and Paul Cudbys side started with the attitude of turning that objective into reality.
Jade Formaston almost put Coventry City in front in the first minute of play when her side-footed volley struck the Aston Villa cross bar and Kirsty Robson came close when she fired wide after some good play down the left from Katy Ward.
Despite their dominance, the Sky Blues had to wait until the 40th minute of play before they took a deserved lead. Kirsty Robson made up for her earlier miss when she rounded the Aston Villa goalkeeper and slotted home from a narrow angle.
The second period followed the same pattern as the first, with Coventry City looking comfortable in all departments, but there was always the threat of Aston Villa drawing level with the score-line sitting at 1-0.
Paul Cudby's side almost doubled their advantage when Kirsty Robson forced a fine save from Naomi Bruton and then from the resulting corner Jade Formaston struck the bar for second time in the match.
Their persistence finally paid off in the 64th minute. Helen Dermody found herself on the end of a sweeping cross-field ball from Natalie Wilcox and the winger made no mistake in wrapping up a 2-0 victory for the Sky Blues with a well-timed volley.
The result puts the Sky Blues top of the Women's Premier League North Division against all odds at this stage of the season following promotion last season and they entertain Derby County at home next Sunday hoping to extend their stay amongst the league's elite teams.
