Coventry has a new non-league team in the form of Coventry Amateurs FC. The club has risen out of the ashes that was Coventry Sporting which folded in 1989 after being unable to secure the Butts as their stadium.
Coventry Amateurs, who include Sky Sports Richard Keys as a former player, has been the brain child of Anthony Lucas who has managed Kenilworth Town in the past as well as being Secretary at Wellesbourne FC.
Having secured use of a ground at Westwood Heath Road, close to their former Kirby Corner home, Amateurs have been accepted into the third division of the Midland Combination League subject to a meeting next Monday night.
Also seeking acceptance into the third division for the first time are Nuneaton Town Reserves.
Two Coventry sides will again compete in the Comb's Premier Division - Coventry Copsewood and Massey Ferguson with Warwickshire sides Southam United and Nuneaton Griff also taking part.
Coventry Sphinx will compete in the Midland Alliance and their supporters will be expecting a far better league season after the club finished in 21st place last season. Sphinx will again enter a team in the Reserve Division and are expected to announce a new reserve team manager shortly.
One division above them in the Southern League will be Nuneaton Town,Bedworth United,Atherstone Town and Leamington FC, whilst Rugby Town now take the mantle as the top team in Warwickshire when they again start the new season in the Southern League Premier Division.
