Coventry Jets Head For Final

Last updated : 17 September 2010 By Adam Etheridge

Gerry McManus will lead his team into the National Final on Saturday riding their longest win streak since 2008, the year they last won the title.

The four game streak culminated in an emphatic 34-8 playoff victory on Sunday at Bristol's Filton WISE home. That win represents the Jets most lopsided post-season win since demolishing the Aztecs 52-20 in the old Division 1A final four years ago. The London Blitz await the Jets as they have done the past three years and will provide a much sterner test.

Whilst McManus' side emerged from a brutal encounter without picking up any new injuries, they did see Dave Cowen ejected, meaning a one match suspension that will be served in the final pending an appeal.

Cowen will be joined on the sideline by Mark Wade who now faces a lengthy spell out of the game after being told that he has damaged both his ACL and MCL, a similar injury to the one which forced New England Patriots' quarterback Tom Brady to miss the 2008 season.

Coventry will require another gargantuan performance from their defence on Saturday, similar to the one that held the Aztecs to less than 100 yards on Sunday. Safety David Saul will once again be key. The GB Lions star had three interceptions in Sunday's victory and has seven overall in his past four games.

The Jets know that they need a big day from their defensive line to shut down the Blitz's vaunted rushing attack.

Jon Dwyer, Danny Williamson, Matt Barrett and Mark Connolly will anchor a line charged with shutting down the Blitz backfield and getting pressure on GB quarterback Fred Boyle. Offensively Lorne Sam will once again need to be on the money, the former Florida State Seminole showed his worth through the air and on the ground in Bristol as he accounted for more than 300 yards for the third straight game.

A settled offensive line has been one of the keys to Coventry's turn around after starting the season with four straight defeats, including two against the Blitz. A 24-22 loss at the Butts Park Arena was closely followed by a 39-20 reverse at Finsbury Park as the Jets suffered an early season spate of injuries. Sam passed for over 500 yards in those two games but was constantly under pressure, something that McManus will hope to have rectified by Saturday.

The final kicks off at 19:00 at Worcester Warrirors' Sixways Stadium.

The National Championship game will be preceded by the youth final in the afternoon as well the junior final. Sandwiched in-between are the junior and cadet flag finals. Coventry's junior squads have both qualified for the playoffs and will hope to make the finals on the main pitch.
