Coventry Jets Win Away

Mark Cohen scored the ninety-third and ninety-fourth touchdowns of his storied Jets' career as he helped Coventry to a 33-19 come from behind victory at the Farnham Knights. Cohen's finest grab was his most straightforward of the day, a 42 yard strike from Lorne Sam on the stroke of half time giving the Jets a lead they wouldn't relinquish on a crucial fourth down play. Sam had escaped the pass rush long enough for Cohen to get open as the score seemed to deflate the hosts and spur the Jets on to a dominant second half performance.

Ayo Tosin opened the scoring for the Knights crashing in from 8 yards after a blocked Alan Steel punt handed the hosts excellent field position. David Saul blocked James Wyatt's extra point to limit the damage to six points. Last week's hero Jeremy Simms struck back quickly with a 34 yard reception from Sam and Steel booted the Jets into their first lead of the day.

Farnham's ensuing possession ground to a halt just outside Coventry's redzone with Knights' Head Coach Ian Ellis electing to send out Wyatt for a 40 yard field goal attempt. Vince Brown knifed through this time to get the block with debutant Danny Williamson on hand to scoop up the loose ball, making 12 yards on a return which included an athletic leap over an attempted tackle.

Coventry couldn't do anything with the ball and the Knights took over as the second period began. Kingsley Ejiogu capped an impressive 11 play drive with a 5 yard run that saw the powerful running back drag two men into the endzone. Wyatt got his kick away this time to stretch Farnham's lead to 13-7. Simms again put his side in front though, this time from 30 yards as the lead swung back and forth. Steel, perfect on the day, kicked the Jets into a narrow 14-13 lead.

Having limited the Knights to short gains throughout the first half, Coventry's defence inexplicably opened up to allow Ejiogu an untouched run of 54 yards for his second touchdown of the game and possibly the easiest of his career. Wyatt's kick clanged off the right upright to keep the Jets close at 19-14. It would be Farnham's final chance to put points on the board as Coventry wouldn't allow so much as a first down after that.

Cohen's first score was set up by a Brown as his tackle on Orion Modebe jarred the ball loose for Saul to recover. Runs from Sam and Tony Perkins put the Jets into Knights' territory before Sam hooked up with Cohen for a 20-19 lead. The second half was all Jets as they forced another turnover and held Farnham to four three and outs.

Sam found Cohen again early in the third for a 26-19 lead, the 11 yard pass was followed up by the pair attempting to repeat the trick on the two point attempt, the result this time was not so favourable though as the giant receiver watched the pass sail out of bounds. Coventry's final score came courtesy of Kofi Campbell, his one yard dive into the endzone came on the back of good running from Perkins and Brown as the Jets moved the ball on the ground, bleeding out the clock. Campbell's score was followed by a Steel kick as Coventry won their second straight game, this time by a score of 33-19.
