Goals Galore But Blaze Beaten

Coventry Blaze opened the new Elite League Ice Hockey season with a home game against Nottingham Panthers but it ended in a 7-4 defeat.

Brad Cruikshank, asissted by Greg Owen and Greg Chambers fired the Blaze ahead with a powerplay goal on 3.49 but Nottingham were level on 5.39 through Matt Myers.



A short-handed goal from Luke Fulghum, assisted by Dan Carlson and Jon Weaver on 9.21 had Coventry back in front but Nottingham,who won 4-3 last night, hit back with goals from David Clarke (11.06) and Jade Galbraith (14.07).

Owen Fussey hit a third for the Blaze, assisted by Russ Cowley and Arron Nell on 14.58, only for the Panthers to score again through Ian McDonald before a goal-filled opening period ended.

Just before the half hour mark, Corey Neilson made it 5-3 to Nottingham and on 37.47, David Beauregard hit a sixth for the visitors.



Into the third period and Greg Owen scored a fourth for the Blaze with a powerplay goal on 43.24, assisted by Dan Carlson.

In the dying seconds, with Blaze having pulled their net minder, Nottingham made sure they left the Sky Dome with a 7-4 victory when Billy Ryan scored an empty net goal.
