The Coventry Jets American Football team have teamed up with corporate partner Old Orleans to support local chapters of two UK based charities. After Mind and Cancer Research UK approached the Jets about making donations for fundraising auctions General Manager Gerry McManus was only too happy to help and brought Andy Heyward, Old Orleans' Manager, on-board.

"We're always happy to step in and help worthy causes" stated McManus, Heyward concurred "There are few, if any, more noble causes than these two great charities, the work they do changes lives and when Gerry extended the invitation to us to get involved we were delighted to assist."

Cancer Research UK are the world's leading charity dedicated to beating cancer through research. Having saved millions of lives by discovering new ways to prevent, diagnose and treat cancer, their aim is simple, to ensure more people survive cancer. Sadly, one in three of us will get cancer at some point so it's vital that the research continues.

Donations to the charity go towards supporting the work of more than 4,000 researchers, doctors and nurses throughout the UK. Cancer Research UK also run high-profile health awareness campaigns, providing clear information to help people understand more about the steps they can take to reduce their risks of developing the disease.

Cheryl Barnacle, a local volunteer for Cancer Research UK, is very pleased that Coventry Jets and Old Orleans have offered to assist her fundraising efforts. "Without the support of companies and members of the public I would not be able to raise the funds that are needed to fight this awful disease." If anyone is interested in helping Cheryl they can contact her by email at cherylbarnacle@hotmail.com or by phoning 02476 328391.

Coventry Mind, a local part of the leading national mental health charity Mind, held a charity ball on the 6th of November to help raise funds for their main aims; work for improvements in mental health care and services, to provide and pioneer facilities to complement and offer alternatives to statutory agencies and to increase public understanding.

Across our community one in four people are likely to experience a mental health problem every year. Mental distress is unfairly misunderstood within the community therefore it is critical for Mind to raise awareness and promote good mental health for the benefit of all members of society.

McManus' team have donated a family ticket for one the Jets 2011 home games which will then be followed by a family meal at Old Orleans. Both charities will use the prizes to raise funds as raffle prizes.
