Held in the Parken stadium, where only a few days prior the Denmark V Sweden football match had been abandoned after a fan ran onto the pitch, the stadium housed a purpose built speedway track which produced yet another eventful grand prix last night.
The Coventry Bees duo of Scott Nicholls and Chris 'Bomber' Harris scored 7 and 5 points respectively from their main 5 rides, but with those that qualified for the semi-final stages achieving 9 points or better it was alas an early night for both. Bomber in particular started off with 2 successive 2nd places but then ran 2 last places to put him out of the running. Scott scored 2 second and 3 third placings.
The GP itself was though won by a rider with Coventry connections in the Swede Andreas Jonsson who, aside from a brief loan spell at the start of last season, has only ever ridden for the Bees in the UK. He finished ahead of current championship leader Nicki Pedersen and the nights most consistant rider in Leigh Adams in the final. His victory was met with a chorus of derision from the stands though as they felt he had impeded Dane Hans Anderson in the semi-final, a decision the meeting referee did not agree with.
Some consolation for the Danish support is that Nicki Pedersen remains on top of the current championship standings with 74 points. For our boys Bomber Harris is in 6th place on 36 points, and Scott lies in 13th on 21 points.
Next up is the British speedway GP at Cardiff's Millenium Stadium on June 30th, and is well worth a visit. Tickets are available at the stadium on the day or can be ordered from www.speedwayworld.tv/cardiff2007
