Coventry Blaze Head Coach, Paul Thompson has today confirmed that he has completed the signing of Canadian forward, Sean Selmser from the Vienna Capitals of the Austrian Elite League.

After four seasons in the WHL with the and Red Deer Rebels (1992-95), the Calgary, Alberta native made his professional debut in 1995-96, splitting the year between the ECHL's Hampton Roads Admirals and the AHL's Portland Pirates. The 6'0" winger went on to play over 200 games in the American Hockey League with Portland, Hamilton and Syracuse and also played over 100 games for Team Canada.

Having been selected by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the 1993 NHL entry draft, Selmser finally made his NHL debut as a member of the Columbus Blue Jackets during the 2000/01 season. After a season with Hamilton in the AHL, Selmser made his move to Europe, being named captain of Ayr Scottish Eagles at the start of the 2002/03 (and final) Superleague season. After the early collapse of the Eagles organisation, he joined the Belfast Giants for their Continental Cup campaign before moving on to Villach in Austria part way through the season.

Two seasons in Villach, two in Graz and the last four in Vienna saw Selmser spend eight seasons in the high quality Austrian Elite League before signing for the Blaze for the new season.

The feisty forward, who joins tough defenceman, Brad Zanon and free scoring forward, Owen Fussey as new Blaze signings, will combine his playing duties with a course of study at Coventry University

"My family and I are really excited to be coming to Coventry next season," said Selmser. "It will be my 16th year of professional hockey and my 9th in Europe and I'm really looking forward to the new challenge with the Blaze.

"The move also gives me another opportunity to play with Jonathan Weaver who was also at Ayr when I first came to the UK and who I've stayed friends with ever since.

"I've played with a number of former Blaze players like Neal Martin and Reid Simonton and I've heard nothing but positive things about the club and the city itself. I'm also very excited to have the opportunity to study at Coventry University while still playing the game that I love. I really am looking forward to the year ahead."

"Sean is a really big signing for this club," added Thompson. "I've been speaking to him on and off for the last three to four years and it's great news for the Blaze that the time is now right for both us, for him to join us for the new season.

"He has had a fantastic career in both North America and in Europe and comes with a huge amount of experience at all levels of the game. He is a hard nosed and committed type of player who will bring leadership and presence, both on the ice and in the locker room. It's hard to compare players, like for like, but he brings many of the same attributes of a Sylvain Cloutier and I feel that any team can only benefit from someone of that stature.

"The Austrian Elite League is of a very, very high standard and when a proven player at that level becomes available, there are always going to be many clubs after the player's services. I'm naturally delighted that Sean has chosen to come to Coventry and that he believes that we are the perfect club for him and his family at this point in his career."
