Coventry Sphinx suffered a two-nil defeat at Studley tonight.

The game at The Beehive was only ninety seconds old when keeper Steve Grogan crashed into the post pushing off a Scott McGregor free kick and was in no state to continue after picking up two broken fingers and Nigel Haylor took over in goal.

In a physical affair,Haylor saved from a 19th minute free kick and then collected a Mark Owen shot two minutes later.

Haylor made a fine save in the 27th minute from a Rhodes curler after an excellent approach play.

Things got ugly two minutes later when Jerome Murdock was flattened by a punch by Lee Knight. Referee Mr Brown only brandished a yellow which incensed the Sphinx support with Adie Fisher also getting a caution.

Sphinx pressed hard but could not find the net and deep in stoppage time,Craig Poutney volleyed in from a corner to give Lee Adams side the lead.

Paul Charnley made two changes early in the second half. Terry Ward who was forced off late on, had a fine game at the back with Mark Owen on the right a constant threat. The main problem that in front of goal, the strikers for once were lacking in accuracy, although in the second period, their chances were at a premium.

In the 73rd minute, one attack broke down. Ager broke and fed Pountney who squared for Jason Ramsey six yards out to score and wrap up a win which sees the Bees move above Sphinx in the Midland Alliance table.

Sphinx will look to make amends when they take on Rocester at home in a Midland Alliance fixture on Saturday at 3pm.

Elsewhere, tonight,Atherstone drew 0-0 at home to Friar Lane & Epworth but Racing Club Warwick were thrashed 6-1 at home by Alvechurch.

In the FA Cup,Bedworth won their replay at home to South Normanton Athletic 1-0.

Don Hutchison scored his first goal for Luton in a 2-0 League Trophy win against Northampton.
