Coventry Sphinx were beaten 3-2 by Atherstone in this morning's Midland Alliance local derby.
Paul Charnley's side, in front of a crowd of 225 at Sphinx Drive, took the lead in the tenth minute when Casey Caggini converted a penalty after a shove in the area.
Sphinx played some good stuff but were undone in the 40th minute when defender James Mace attempted to pass the ball back to his own keeper Paul Shepherd who hit an air shot, allowing the ball to trickle past him into the net.
The game had seen plenty of stoppages and in the second minute of time added on at the interval, Jimmy Ginnelly's side took the lead when Luke Barlone swept home a ball from the right.
The refereeing of this game by Mr Mayle had not gone down well with both sets of supporters and in the 54th minute, Jerome Murdock was sent off after running past his man. Murdock who had been booked two minutes earlier protested his innocence but the referee was having none of it and sent the forward off.
Adam Knibbs, who is coming back to the side after missing fourteen weeks through injury, had been on the pitch for only three minute when he headed home from a corner to draw Sphinx level.
Only for substitute Matt Brown, who had been on for four minutes to make a free header from a cross from the right count and keep The Adders at the top of the Midland Alliance.
