Coventry Sphinx earned a hard fought draw against Rocester.

With Paul Charnley on holiday. Lynton Wilkinson took over the side and gave a debut to Jamie Holmes, the son of former Sky Blue Jimmy in a side much changed from that which had lost at Studley.

Both sides failed to gain an early advantage and the closest we came to a goal was a twenty yard drive from Robbie Scott which flew inches over the crossbar.

With both sets of supporters unhappy at some of the decisions from the officials,Mark Orpe who was getting to a number of free headers, was first to a Soane cross which Sphinx keeper Calum Harrison grabbed.

In the 33rd minute,Sphinx took the lead thanks to Martin Heath's back pass being kicked off the line by the keeper. Robbie Scott was first to the loose ball and drove it into the net from eight yards.

Nine minutes into the second half and Rocester drew level when a Mark Orpe shot was parried by Harrison on its way into the net.

The goal lifted the Staffordshire side and a 58th minute Souter shot was fisted over the bar by Harrison.

Kyle Rhodes and Dave Drennan worked hard in midfield for Sphinx with Rhodes just missing with a long ranger seconds after substitute Jerome Murdock had a close range effort saved.

A super save from Lathan in the 72nd minute stopped an Adam Knibbs header.

Sphinx kept pressing and a superb shot on the turn from the edge of the box, clipped the far post.

With six to go,Lathan saved when Murdock was clean through.

But Sphinx could not break the deadlock and had to share the points.

Lynton Willkinson after the game said: "We played well. If it was not for a good performance from their keeper,we would have had three points. "I can't fault the effort and committment that we showed today.

Coventry Sphinx Reserves won 2-1 at Rushall Olympic in a Midland Combination Reserve Division fixture. Covsupport sponsored Danny McSheffrey (pictured below) equalised on the stroke of half-time with a penalty with Josh Cole getting the winner for Lee Knibbs side in the second half.
