Coventry Sphinx are through to the Third Round Proper of the FA Vase after a 2-1 victory at Bewdley Town.

Paul Charnley's side were not helped by their coach breaking down and having to wait for a replacement which meant that the game at Ribbesford Meadow did not kick off until 3.30pm.

Sphinx were the better side in the opening period and should have had two penalties when Man Of the Match Kyle Rhodes was brought down by the keeper in the tenth minute and the 29th minute when a blatant handball was ignored by referee Vic Kelly.

The pace of Jerome Murdock caused problems all afternoon and in the 68th minute and seconds after the home side were reduced to ten men when Sean Wright was sent off, he scored.

Bewdley keeper Tom Harper got down to push the ball away. Callum Woodward knocked the ball back to Jerome Murdock and the striker rifled home with a low drive from inside the area.

Callum Harrison made a superb save to deny Chris Hough allowing Sphinx to break.

The ball fell to Kyle Rhodes who steadied himself before driving home an 87th minute shot much to the delight of a large travelling support.

The game was far from finished and just before the end of normal time, the West Midlands League side pulled one back. Chris Hough rounded Harrison and crossed for Jamie Hart at the far post to score.

Mr Kelly played nine and a half minutes of stoppage time before Sphinx could celebrate their place in Round Three.

Stratford Town are out of the FA Vase losing 1-0 at Shawbury United. Rugby Town lost 4-1 at Halesowen with Atherstone beating Shifnal 2-0 at home and in an eight goal thriller, Racing Club Warwick drew 4-4 at Rocester after leading 4-2 with twenty minutes left.

In the Midland Combination Premier Division, Coventry Copsewood lost 3-0 at home to Brocton but Massey Ferguson beat Walsall Wood 2-0 and Nuneaton Griff beat Bartley Green 3-2.

Jimmy Halton scored for Coventry Sphinx Reserves in a 1-1 draw at Oadby.
