Coventry City U18's were caught napping by Aston Villa and  went down to their first defeat of the season.

Greg Rioch's side started well as they have done this season with a spell that had taken them up to second in the table.

A great twelfth minute run from Joel Grandison down the left, saw him get past three opponents and centre for Matty West to side foot wide. The Birmingham born forward had another chance three minutes later when he fired at the keeper.

Villa, who fielded three Coventry based players including two subject to a compensation deal, started to take control.

Former City youngster Richard Blythe headed over and in the 24th minute, Michael Quirke superbly pushed a drive by Harry Forrester onto the bottom of his right hand post.

On the half hour mark,City were made to pay for losing possession when former City Youngster Kofi Poyser cut inside the defence to beat Michael Quirke.

Two minutes later and there was more misery for a good Sky Blue support in a bigish gate at Bodymoor Heath, when James Collins was brought down inside the area and stepped up to bang home the resulting spot kick.

City were for once unable to find any rhythmn and in the 58th minute went three goals down. Poyser crashed a header onto the bat and Collins volleyed home from ten yards. There were calls for offside but referee Mr Heywood awarded the goal after reprimanding Quirke for protesting.

With Sean Jeffers having to be replaced after a head injury, City conceded a fourth goal in the 75th minute.

It was Coventry based James Collins, who found the net after being allowed to dance his way into the area and thump a shot which crashed home off the crossbar for his hat-trick.

In the 86th minute, the rout was completed thanks to Will Grocott stunning strike flying high into the net.

Next Saturday,City travel to MK Dons.
