Conor Thomas, who was making his way back from suffering concussion in the pre-season game at Nuneaton Town, had a clash of heads with Jack Finch and was taken off as a precaution.
Coventry took the lead in the 40th minute when trialist Lateef Elford-Alliyu raced through, on a Swanson ball and finished past Evtimov.
Three minutes into the second half and City had a second goal when Evtimov was chipped by George Thomas and although substitute Kasheme Walton scored in the second minute of stoppage time, the Sky Blues won 2-1 in front of a crowd of 481.
