Coventry City U21's went down to a 2-1 defeat at home to Millwall.
City Boss Dave Hockday named a side which saw Al Bangura start with Shaun Miller back up front along with the Australian trialist.
With City old boys Ray Gooding and Claus Jorgensen in the crowd of supporters and scouts in the main stand at the Ricoh Arena on a cold afternoon, Millwall were the first to attack winning a corner after 46 seconds.
Another corner followed in the fourth minute when Ryan Haynes dived in to block from Pavey.
A third corner ensued as did a fifth minute free kick on the edge of the area which saw Miller ahead away Jack Powell's free kick.
Miller on the right then shot at Tom King in the Lions goal and won a throw in the eighth minute.
Jake Richards, who will be leaving City at the end of the season, saved from Philpott.
In the 14th minute, Bas Sambou got in a great position on the right but could only drive across the goal but Milwall were straight up the other end winning a corner.
There was plenty of effort from the Sky Blues who were holding their own in a game fought mainly in midfield.
In the 27th minute, Millwall took the lead when JP Rylah got the ball on the blue line on the Ricoh pitch and sent a superb strike into the bottom corner of the net.
Bangura fired over at the end of a 31st minute move he started and Finch fired at King.
Miller headed wide from a Finch cross after good work by Haynes before the trialist set up Conor Thomas for a 42nd minute dipping shot which went for a corner.
Sambou had his header saved and Wall countered with Ben Thompson firing at Richards.
Just before half time, City got a bit of luck when the ball came over to Shaun Miller on the left and he hit a deflected shot which looped past King and into the net.
Nine minutes in to the second half, with Tony Mowbray and Steve Ogrizovic watching on as well as Pete Tierney and the trialist who looked quite useful sent Miller on his way but he curled wide, ignoring the unmarked Sambou to his right.
Conor Thomas fired in a shot at King in the 62nd minute for a City side who sent George Thomas on for Miller three minutes later.
Millwall won two corners and Bangura fired over as did Finch in the 70th minute and George Thomas a minute later.
Bas Sambou picked up a knock and limped off so Kyle Spence, another City youngster who has been given a professional deal, came on for the final fourteen minutes.
A Haynes cross had to be grabbed on the line by King after coming off the back of a Millwall defender and Philpott gave Richards an easy catch in front of a City defence which had been well marshall by Ivor Lawton.
There was four minutes left when out of nothing Millwall attacked and Kyrone Farrell curled home from the edge of the area.
Philpott was booked after firing high into the away end but City were beaten and went down to a defeat.
