Coventry City Reserves battled well to earn a deserved 3-0 victory at Huddersfield this afternoon.
For this trip to the Galpharm Stadium, City Reserve team boss fielded a young side with Ellery Cairo,Kevin Thornton and Wayne Andrews, the only players who have started for the first team.
Steve Ogrizovic's team watched by Iain Dowie and Frankie Bunn, should have been ahead in the third minute. Ellery Cairo won the corner which saw Callum Burgess power a header over from a Thornton flag kick.
Three more corners followed as City playing in red started to camp themselves in the Huddersfield half.
When the home side, whose first team faces Chelsea in the FA Cup, did attack they were restricted to one corner and a James Berrett long ranger which Danny Ireland was down smartish to smother.
In the 26th minute,City were ahead thanks to a superb nutmeg by Cairo to play the ball to Andrews on the right. The striker slipped the ball into the six yard box and Donovan Simmonds got on the end to fire City ahead.
Another nutmeg by Cairo, two minutes later, set up Andrews but this time, the shot went across the face of the goal.
This was encouraging stuff from City with every player working well and tackling back when required.
As the bright sun dipped over the away end stand and the biting wind started to take effect, the trickery of Cairo caused problems until just before the break.
Leon Quarless forced Ireland into a point blank save and then steered the loose ball onto the bar and away to safety.
John Dungworth changed his strikers at half-time and in the 56th minute, Steve Ogrizovic made his first change bringing on Andrew Richie.
City lived life dangerously with the ball twice going across the face of the goal but in the 61st minute, a Wayne Andrews header from a free kick had to be pushed away by Alex Smithies who then dropped the resulting corner before clearing for another.
A second City change came in the 65th minute when Brad Jones limped off with an ankle injury.
Four minutes later, Cairo sent Andrews down the left. His cross was met by a flick header from Simmonds which went over the keeper and into the net.
With three minutes to go,a fine win was wrapped up with a fine goal. Fitzharris sent trialist Aaron Griffiths free down the middle. A powerful run over thirty yards took him to the edge ofthe area. He finished with a superb drive that flew into the net.
