Coventry City U21’s put in an excellent performance to beat Wigan Athletic 4-2
With the Ricoh Arena pitch frozen, the game was moved to the training ground at Ryton at very short notice in order to get the match played.
Supporters were allowed into Ryton to see City go a goal down in the sixth minute when the Latics were awarded a penalty when Angoy was brought down by Chris Dunn. Up stepped Daniel Redmond and although, Dunn was able to smother his shot, ball ran lose and Redmond was able to tap into the net.
Chris Dunn, who has played well for the U21’s of late, made a good save from Agnoy but in the seventeenth minute, City were level when Callum Wilson got the ball inside the area and turned the ball inside for Danny Philliskirk, who also had a good game to score with a shot from seven yards.
There was only parity for less than a minute as Wigan attacked from the kick off and Danny Redmond was on hand to volley past the diving Dunn’s left hand from twelve yards.
Redmond missed a chance to complete his hat-trick when he shot across the goal from a Eduard Campabadal cross from the right. Lee Carsley’s side recomposed themselves and slipped the ball to Callum Wilson who beat Marosi and give make the score 2-2 with 21 minutes gone.
City lost Wilson’s strike partner Shaun Jeffers to an injury and were grateful for some great defending from Dunn, Jordan Clarke, playing at centre half and Joe Henderson for ensuring that the Sky Blues were level at the break.
Neither side really created a chance in the opening fifteen minutes of the second half and both managers made changes. Wigan had already replaced Agnoy at the break and replaced Fyvie with Wilson, whilst Lee Carsley took off Josh Ruffels and brought on Louis Garner.
With Conor Thomas and Billy Daniels pulling the strings in midfield to compliment the work of Philliskirk, Daniels had a 66th minute free kick pushed over by Mariso for a corner.
That was cleared and another soon followed thanks to the perseverance of Will Roberts. The corner and the second saw the ball fall for Jordan Clarke to score in the 69th minute with a low drive from fourteen yards.
Billy Daniels was headbutted by Jonathan Lynch but the referee decided that a lecture was the best course of action and the game continued.
City won two corners in quick succession and from the second corner, the ball went across the area and was met by Garner who pulled it back for Callum Wilson to volley in and give City, who face Derby County on Monday, a 4-2 win.
