A game of two halves saw Coventry Sphinx go down to a 3-2 home defeat to Dunkirk tonight in a Midland Alliance fixture.

Boosted by their draw against Boldmere on Saturday, Sphinx started positively against the Nottingham based side.

A telling Junior Williams cross was headed wide by Luke Williams who went wide with a low drive in the fifteenth minute.

Three minutes later and the Sphinx support had their head in their hands when a five-yard flick by Williams again beat the keeper but missed the far post.

With Sphinx's midfield quartet working hard, Danny McShefrey's side won two corners before Luke Williams reacted to a loose ball on the edge of the area and thumped a low 32nd minute drive which visiting keeper Jake Went dived to his left to save.

Theo Smith drilled wide after a good move from the visitors before the half ended with Sphinx on top.

Straight after the restart, Went got a touch to push a Robbie Stevenson free kick onto the bar.

Against the run of play, Theo Smith got down the right and hit a powerful 55th minute into the corner of the net.

The Sphinx support could not believe it and six minutes later, Dunkirk went further in front when Daniel Elliott curled high into the net.

With eleven minutes to go, Theo Smith, got to a loose ball on the half way line and danced his way into the area before beating O'Neill with a low drive into the bottom corner for the visitors third goal.

In the 84th minute, Paul Saunders got into the area and was able to slip the ball under Went to reduce the arrears from sixteen yards but Dunkirk who had two more chances late on, took the points back up the M1.
