Coventry Sphinx's unbeaten home league record when they went down to a late defeat against Loughborough University.

With changes made following Tuesday night's defeat at Stratford, Sphinx did everything apart from score in the first half.

Danny McSheffrey had structured his side so that Josh Ruff played up front with Kelvin Phillips and the former Bedworth player did well in the eleventh minute of this Midland Alliance encounter at Sphinx Drive in order to create some space to get the ball on his right foot and fire wide from the edge of the area.

Along with Ruff, Jamie McAteer also worked hard for the Sphinx cause. He sent a header over in the 15th minute and was on hand to help deal with a Loughborough corner two minutes later.

Ruff just missed the far post in a neat 20th minute move as Sphinx controlled the play.

In the 36th minute, Chris Wilson-King's crafted long ball won a corner and there was McAteer to get in a header. Unfortunately, James Skinner was on his goal-line and the danger was cleared.

Andrew Woodall saw his volley well saved and Calum Woodward fired wide of the far post before the well-refereed first half was brought to a close.

Sphinx continued to have the better of the chances into the second half with a Woodall header from a 65th minute free kick and Craig Goodbody just missing the keeper's right hand post from a twenty five yard free kick.

However, the Sphinx management and support were left feeling they had been mugged when Loughborough wrapped up a victory late on as they had done in the opening game of the season.

This time, it came from an 83rd minute corner. The ball bounced inside the penalty area and Ryan Carulan was on hand to drive the ball into the net from six yards and give former Ipswich and Chesterfield boss John Duncan's side the victory.

Sphinx travel to Westfields next Saturday before facing Rocester at Sphinx Drive in the Polymac League Cup Quarter-Final on Tuesday February 2nd.
