Coventry Sphinx put in a superb performance tonight to beat Southern League Midland Division side Bedworth United 3-0 at Sphinx Drive.

Danny McSheffrey was able to field a strong side whilst Simon Benn brought down a mixed squad of eighteen players in a match that saw a minute's silence for former Bedworth player Terry Wilkes who died on Sunday.

The visitors were restricted to just a couple of chances in the whole match and one came in the sixth minute when a Bedworth free kick was deflected away for a corner.

Sphinx, who had beaten local rivals Coventry Copsewood and Massey Ferguson in their last two pre-season matches, matched Bedworth in every department and were soon creating chances of their own.

A surging 16th minute run by Callum Woodward required a deft clearance from a defender to prevent the ball falling for Arron Donaldson.

Three minutes later, the Sphinx defence were caught napping for the only time in the game and the Bedworth number ten was able to get in a long range shot which caught keeper Tom Farmer out of position but sailed a couple of feet wide of the post.

Sphinx regained their composure and went straight up the other end and Arron Donaldson drew a good block from Jack Weir in the Bedworth goal when he was through.

Robbie Stevenson sent an inswinger not far wide of the goal and in the 33rd minute, Kyle Rhodes headed wide from a corner.

Rhodes may have missed on that occasions but in the 40th minute, he was not to be denied when he got in a far post header from a corner that went into the net via the goalkeeper.

Both sides made changes in the second half and in the 65th minute, it was 2-0 to Sphinx when substitute Chris O'Shea who had just come on, raced past his marker and delivered a ball to the far side of the area for fellow substitute Ellis Alleyne to set up for Kyle Rhodes to drive hard into the net from 18 yards.

Thirteen minutes from time, a good night's work was sealed when Kelvin Phillips got onto a through ball and delivered a powerful flick past the keeper to send the Sphinx support home happy.

Sphinx's next pre-season game is against Loughborough Dynamoes at Warwick University's Cryfield on Saturday. This is followed by a home game against Coventry City U18's on Tuesday night. Kick off at 7.30pm.
