Coventry Sphinx will take a one goal lead to Stourbridge for the second leg of the Polymac Midland Alliance League Cup Semi-Final on April 15th thanks to a stoppage time header from Kyle Rhodes giving Sphnx a 1-0 victory against Causeway United.
On a wet night at Sphinx Drive, visiting keeper Todd Henderson was only tested once in the opening forty five minutes when he dived to his right to save a Callum Woodward tenth minute shot.
Although, Carl Burley's side played the ball around, it was Sphinx who had the efforts on goal with Callum Woodward, Josh Ruff and Kyle Rhodes all firing over.
In the 51st minute, there was a huge melee involving a number of players and officials. When things calmed down, Danny Jones was shown a red card and Callum Woodward, who he had shoved a yellow card.
Causeway tightened their defence and looked happy to leave with a draw but as the match wore on, Sphinx had other ideas.
Henderson brilliantly pushed over a Kelvin Phillips header in the 65th minute and was on the spot to block following a corner, before pushing a shot onto the post following a scramble in the penalty area with five minutes of normal time left.
Four minutes of stoppage time were announced. Henderson failed to hold a corner and Kyle Rhodes headed over but in the fourth minute, Rhodes was not be denied when he got to a cross from the right and headed home to give Sphinx, who travel to Studley on Thursday night for a League game, a first leg advantage.
