Coventry Sphinx gifted a victory to Walsall Wood in a Midland Football League Premier Division fixture.

In an entertaining game, played in front of a good crowd at Sphinx Drive, Luke Hopkins’ side were denied a penalty in the eighth minute when Jackson Downie who had a fine game was taken down inside the area.

However, after Baxter had been booked, Sphinx took the lead when an Ashley Cain cross from the right was met by Jamie Newton. Dale Faultless, one of the best keepers in the division, got a hand to Newton’s shot but could not stop the ball crossing the line and giving Newton his first goal in Sphinx colours.

Ashley Cain worked hard for the team winning a 21st minute corner before being involved in a great move which saw him find Luke Downes who played in Jackson Downie for a shot which crashed against the cross bar.

Walsall hit back forcing Sphinx keeper Carl O’Neill into two good saves but Sphinx countered with a corner and efforts from Baxter, Downie and Nic Evangelinos.

Just over two minutes had been played in the second half when the visitors were awarded a penalty following a Ricky Fletcher shove. Upstepped Joe Butlin and the scores were level.

Cain caused Walsall a few problems but the visitors, who were relying on the counter attack, forced Sphinx keeper Carl O’Neill to come out of his goal more and more to clear.

Sphinx had had chances but in the 89th minute, substitute Steven Hayles got through on the left. O’Neill came out and missed the ball and Hayles was able to stroke the ball into an empty net and send Sphinx to a defeat.
