Coventry Sphinx were in action this afternoon in a friendly at Southern League Midland Division side Woodford United.
Paul Charnley made a number of changes from the side that had come back to draw at Heather on Tuesday night due to unavailabilities and found themselves up against former Sphinx players in Craig Civellis and Josh Cole as well as former Coventry City reserve teamer Adam Layfield in his first game since March due to a leg operation.
Sphinx more than hold their own, winning a couple of corners and might have had a 27th minute penalty when Jimmy Halton was pulled down as he tried to dive over the home keeper.
Five minutes before the break, Woodford took the lead when a corner hit the shins of Sphinx skipper Jimmy Holmes and left Dale Huddlestone in the Sphinx goal wrong-footed. The ball bounced on the line before Dan Hicks tapped in.
Six minutes into the second half, Coventry based Dave Brassington's side scored again, thanks to Andy Skinner converting a Layfield cross from the left.
Paul Charnley rang the changes and in the 65th minute, Sphinx were back in the match when a cross found Callum Woodward on the right who finished smartly.
Sphinx battled until the end but could not get an equaliser and went down to defeat.
