COVENTRY SPHINX 0-2 BOLDMERE ST MICHAELS.
Coventry Sphinx went out of the Polymac League Cup with a 2-0 defeat to high flying Boldmere St Michaels.
Sphinx were unchanged from the team which had beaten Coleshill Town 2-1 on Saturday and started reasonably well on a bitter night at Sphinx Drive with Matty Taylor firing wide, followed by Jack Rooney having a pile-driver pushed over Adam Jenkins.
Boldmere, who were happy to contest every decision with the referee early on, forced Sphinx keeper Carl O’Neill into a fifteenth minute save with his legs after Christima Agbonlahor, the brother of the Aston Villa player, had crossed for Jason Holmes to get in a shot.
Luke Downes, who had another good game for Sphinx, had a go on goal as did Jacob Dodds but in the 41st minute, Boldmere took the lead with a stunning shot from Kieron Clarke from the edge of the area.
Clarke missed a sitter following a 51st minute corner but in a game of few chances, Boldmere scored a second goal in the 69th minute when Jason Holmes was able to flick a loose ball past O’Neill.
Playing against his old club, Boldmere substitute Chris Gummery went wide with Jenkins at the other end saving from David Blenkinsopp following a 77th minute cross from Jack Downes.
Jackson Downie, another Sphinx player who worked hard, sent in a long ranger and Boldmere won a late corner but Sphinx were out of the League Cup Second Round.
