Coventry Sphinx worked hard to come away with a 3-1 victory against Oldbury United.

With Sphinx Boss Paul Charnley in Barbados, Reserve team boss Danny McSheffrey took charge for the match played at Tividale FC and saw his side go behind after only 29 seconds to a Matty Gardener looping cross which went into the net at the far post.

Being a goal down to the side bottom of the Midland Alliance, sparked Sphinx into life and they were level fifteen minutes later.

The goal came when they were awarded a penalty for a shove. Tom Thacker had his spot kick saved by Paul Fellows but the referee Mr Hardisty spotted an encroachment into the area and ordered the kick to be retaken.

This time, Thacker struck the post but man of the match Callum Woodward was on hand to seize on the rebound and drill the ball into the bottom corner of the net.

Both sides battled for control of the midfeld ground with the influential Woodward and Kyle Rhodes feeding the forwards whilst Terry Ward and Aidy Greatex marshall the defence.

In the 71st minute, the second of two corners led to Sphinx taking the lead.

Woodward sent over a ball right into the mixer for Aidy Greatex to bundle home his first goal for Sphinx.

Oldbury nearly levelled three minutes later when substitute Bryan Marquois got through but Anthony Bevas got back to clear off the line.

Fellows was having a fine game for the home side and denied firstly Robbie Stevenson and Jerome Murdock but he could do nothing to stop Sphinx wrapping up the match with a third goal.

It came in the 87th minute when a Stevenson free kick was headed in from close range by substitute Dave Freeman for his first ever first team goal.

In the final minute, a bad challenge from Maxwell Bissoll saw him red carded as Sphinx left with a good night's work in the bag.
