Fancy being part of a Coventry icon? Well Coventry Market is looking for someone to run its famous roundabout. The roundabout is returning to Council ownership on July 18th and applications are invited from interested people to run it as a business.
The roundabout has been operated by the market traders since it's re-launch in 2001 and now requires updating and some maintenance so it's hopeful that a new operator can be found for the roundabout to take part in its refit.
The famous roundabout, was originally owned by 'Uncle Jack' and Flora Statham they acquired their first roundabout in 1946, parking it on bomb sites after the war moving on when the land was redeveloped. In those days Flora and Jack lived in a single-decker bus parked next to wherever the roundabout happened to be. They eventually moved to The Rex and later the Barracks Market. In 1958 the famous roundabout was moved to the brand new 'Round' Market, and history was made for Flora and Jack when their roundabout became the first one ever officially opened by Royalty, Her Royal Highness Princess Alexandra on 4th November of that year.
Brian Sexton Market Manager said, "We have already had some interest in operating the roundabout and a decision will be made at the end of July, a panel will look at who has put in the best business plan as well as new ideas to make the ride even better. So it's not too late to apply to run it. Obviously the children's safety is absolutely the first consideration and the roundabout has had an unblemished record which we will insure continues".
Brian went on to say, "we are hoping to include a new music and lighting system and introduce some modern vehicles for the children to play on as well as making sure the traditional rides so many people remember are refurbished".
As it will be a council let venture applications are welcomed from everyone and they will be considered equally by a markets panel. It is hoped that if a new tenant is found the roundabout will undertake some decorative maintenance throughout the summer and more extensive work during the autumn ready for a fantastic re-launch at Christmas. Interested applicants are welcome to collect further information from the market office in Coventry Market.
