Before 2 Tone there was......
On Friday 11th September at 4.00pm the 7th 2 Tone Trail plaque will be unveiled (sponsored by Harris Signs Group) at the Holyhead Youth Club building now Artspace, in the Lower Holyhead Road. Artspace are also opening that famous basement to guided tours as part of Coventry's Heritage Weekend.
2-Tone @ 30 Organiser Pete Chambers said, "I recently toured the building myself, and the basement is still pretty much as it was, with the hand-painted walls still evident, it was shivers down-the spine time for me. It felt like a moment in time, trapped forever, as I stood there I thought of Neville when he first met the band in that very building that would become The Specials. I thought of the jam-sessions that took place in there. None of those young guys experimenting in sound would have any idea how they would go on to change the face of British music.
A tour of this building is an opportunity that no ska or indeed music fan should miss".( tours are on the hour between 10:30am-3:30pm: on Sat 12 & Sun 13th September, not Friday).
At night on the 11th September at 8.00pm, The Caribbean Centre Lower Spon Street (£3.00 Entry fee), will celebrate those early days, with some very Special guests, playing live and spinning some seminal sounds. To bring it all up to date we have the future of 2 Tone and Ego Rocks, a musical youth group based at Coventry Transport Museum, giving young dudes a chance to develop their musical skills (now that sounds familiar). Putting it all in perspective on the night, we launch the most eagerly anticipated book written about the history of The Specials "You're Wondering Now, The Specials from Conception to Reunion" by 2 Tone expert Paul 'Willo' Williams. It's your chance to get a signed copy and meet this Legend in the world of 2 Tone and Ska.
The unveiling will be performed by Special 2 Tone guests and the High Commission for St Vincent & The Grenadines Mr. Cenio Lewis KCMG.
