Coventry Blaze Ice Hockey team have appointed American Chuck Weber as their new head coach until the end of the season.

The 41 year old from New Yorl has experience in America and with Medvescak Zagreb this season.

Director of hockey James Pease said to the Blaze website: "Chuck has had a fantastic ECHL and AHL coaching career, winning the Kelly Cup twice.

"He has generally stayed with organisations for a few years where he has put structures in place to improve and make them better and that is what we know he can do with the Blaze.

"Chuck has been in the KHL which is regarded as the second best league in the world, he is hungry and ambitious and will make our organisation better.

"We know he is unlikely to stay beyond the end of the season because he will be hunted by other leagues in Europe and North America but we know he can make a big impact.

"We will utilise his experience and knowledge to the maximum while he is here. We are very lucky to have him and it is a fantastic opportunity for us to learn from him as we strive to get this club challenging for trophies again.

"It’s simply an opportunity for this club not to miss and it was so important we found a way to make this happen.  This is an appointment, not just for now, but one that can help this club go forward in the future.  He will be a fantastic ally in future years when it comes to recruiting and he will play a big part in helping us to put in place our coaching structure beyond this season.

“We will have to wait a couple of weeks while he gets his UK entry visa and in the meantime, Steven Goertzen and Mike Egener will carry on doing the great job they have done in a short space of time.  I’d like to thank them for stepping up to the plate after Marc’s departure and they will both continue to play an integral part, working with Chuck, for the rest of this season.  It’s a great opportunity for both of them if they are considering a coaching career in the future and I know they are very excited that a coach of Chuck’s pedigree is coming here for them to learn from.

“This type of opportunity doesn't come along very often and we are delighted that Chuck will be joining us.”
