Coventry Cycle Speedway Club hosted the Chris Allen Memorial Trophy on Sunday afternoon and 15 year old pocket rocket Kyle Roberts continued his scintillating form as he raced to yet another full maximum.
Roberts was in scintillating form to storm to a perfect 20 point maximum to win his first ever senior meeting, staged in honour of 19 year old Chris Allen, who tragically died at the Hearsall Common track in 1973.
The Kenilworth schoolboy fended off opposition including the Polish duo of Konrad Pietak and Dominik Rycharski, previous winner Mark Winwood and several Coventry rivals including Mason Phillips, Daniel Drewett and Kelvin Williams.
Roberts, a new recruit of the Coventry club, has excelled this season and is tipped by many for future fame in the sport. The Bretford based ‘skid kid’ claimed multiple big name scalps throughout the European Club Championships at Exeter in May, then scored a dashing maximum on senior international duty at Newport in July.
The victory was made all the more touching as Roberts is a close friend to the Allen family – who have helped him through his current Motorcycle Speedway career, where Roberts races in the British Youth Championships.
Three consecutive heat wins for Roberts put him in good shape for a podium finish; however he was yet to face his three main title rivals – Pietak, Rycharski and Winwood. A compelling ride in heat 16 saw Roberts fend off both of his Polish opposition, the 15 year old then held Welsh international Mark Winwood for four laps to confirm victory.
Czestochowa racer Dominik Rycharski was forced to settle for second position whilst Roberts’ fellow 15 year old racer – Mason Phillips – was delighted to pick up third place.
Full scores from the 2014 Chris Allen Memorial Trophy:
Kyle Roberts 20, Dominik Rycharski 19, Mason Phillips 17, Mark Winwood 15, Dave Meanley 15, Daniel Drewett 14, Konrad Pietak 14, Ewan Hancox 12, Steve Hodgkinson 11, Paul Timms 10, Matt Hambridge 10, Kelvin Williams 9, Ollie Morris 9, Charlie Barnett 9, Sammie Marsh 7, Emily Pitt 5.
Meanwhile, Coventry announced plans for their annual end of season party. The Hearsall Common based club will host a night of music, lights and razzmatazz at the Craftsman Public House Function, in Holbrooks, on Saturday 15th November.
