British Cycling have announced that Sir Dave Brailsford has stepped down from his role as Performance Director and he will now put all his efforts into his role as Team Boss of Team Sky.

“For me it just feels like a natural transition,” Brailsford, who was with British Cycling since 1998, told Sky Sports News. “We’ve thought for quite a long time as to how we can leave British Cycling and get it in the best-possible shape so the riders get the best support going into Rio. That’s got to be the most important thing.

“It’s been well documented that my time has been more and more spread across Team Sky and British Cycling. Of course Team Sky has grown with the success at the Tour de France. I just felt that with the back-up that exists at British Cycling, with Ian Drake still in charge – a fantastic CEO – and Shane Sutton there who I’ve worked with for many years, it’s the right team to move that team on on a full-time basis.

“My time now needs to be focused on Team Sky. The growth of cycling is something that’s really important to us and we want to focus on Sky’s input to that. There’s still so much more to do and I’m absolutely convinced it’s the right thing to be doing.”
