Mark Cavendish has given an indication that he will ride on the track in the 2016 Rio Olympics by entering the Belgian Open.
The two day event in Gent on September 6/7 would give Cavendish, who is not competing in the Vuelta a Espana or the World Championships in Florence, enough UCI track points to compete in world cup races of which the first is in Manchester in November and the Olympics in less than three years time.
Cavendish, who last appeared on the track in a Revolution Series race in Manchester in 2011 and before that with Madison partner Peter Kennaugh at the Track Cycling World Championships in Pruszkow, Poland in 2009, will compete in the scratch and pursuit races.
