Orica GreenEdge's Simon Clarke was handed overall victory of the 61st Jayco Sun Herald Tour in Australia after the final fourth stage was cancelled.

The final stage had been a 124km stage starting and finishing in Arthur's Seat but the threat of bushfires and strong winds on a day where temperatures were around the forty degree mark, the stage was cancelled by race director John Trevorrow on the advise of fire and police officials, who had warned that despite there being no immediate threat to the roads the riders were due to use, there was the potential of fire taking only seven minutes to reach the peak of Arthurs Seat, which had smoke coming from its summit as the riders signed on.

Simon Clarke, who had an eight second lead over Cameron Wurf of Cannondale was awarded the race win and told cyclingnews.com: "It's unfortunate for the organisers that the last stage was cancelled today, but we are still really happy to have won the overall here.

"I'm looking forward to having this win on my palmarès.

"I still get to stand on the podium, for us it is still a great win and we're stoked to have been able to come away winning "Gerro didn't get the triple-crown, but GreenEdge got the triple crown.

"So we're happy as a team, it's been a great summer for us and we'll go to Europe motivated to try and continue that run."
