Tinkoff Saxo's Alberto Contador leads the UCI World Tour rankings list following his victory in the Vuelta a Espana.
Contador has a fourteen point lead over Movistar's Alejandro Valverde at the top of the table which sees Simon Gerrans of Orica Green Edge in third after his two wins in the GP Cycliste de Quebec and Montreal.
Speaking about Contador's win in La Vuelta, Tinkoff Saxo DS, Steven De Jongh said to his team's press office: “It’s simply as astonishing achievement by Alberto. Coming back from an injury like that after declaring himself out a couple of weeks before the Vuelta and not only rides well but takes the win, is just amazing. We entered the race hoping that we could get a stage win in the last week of the race but as the race progressed and Alberto felt stronger by the day, we had to change strategy and go for the overall classification. So, with two stage wins in the pocket, the combined jersey as well as the overall win, we couldn’t be happier”
Chris Froome of Team Sky is the top British and Irish rider. Froome is seventh on 326 points, compared to Contador's 620 points.
Geraint Thomas is in 27th place, Danny Martin of Garmin-Sharp in 39th, Mark Cavendish 55th, Adam Yates 86th, Phillip Deignan 90th, Sir Bradley Wiggins 126th, Nicholas Roche 187th, Steve Cummings 204th.
