Coventry Cycle Speedway club enjoyed their best ever performance in the British Junior & Youth League in the Midlands Regional round 3, staged at Hearsall Common last Saturday.
The event took place in glorious sunshine and the sun shone on the Coventry riders as they racked up their biggest ever score in the British Junior & Youth League since their tremendous return to top line racing in 2012.
The city skid-kids scored 138 team points to finish in second place overall on the day, easily beating their previous highest total of 115 points. They almost won the round, trailing winners Wednesfield Aces by just 9 points.
And, for the first time ever, Coventry provided two of the age category winners. Ollie Morris produced a scintillating overtaking pass to take the victors laurels in the under 14s final, ahead of teammates Jimmy Wassall and Spencer Sawbridge.
Sammi Marsh again displayed her growing reputation by taking the girls final, her first finals victory of the season, staking her claim for an international call-up later in the year in the process.
In a hugely successful afternoon, Coventry riders also registered several podium finishers. In addition to Wassall in the under 14s final, Jack Reynolds also won the silver medal in the under 8s final, and fast improving Ben Wells also took second in the under 12s event.
There were also `A` final appearances for Bailie Phillips, Charlie Barnett and debutant James Morris to complete an excellent day for the host club. They now have their strongest crop of juniors since the club were formed in 1978.
There was more success for the Coventry club on Wednesday evening (20th May), as the Myke Grimes and Bobby McMillan partnership took second place in the Midlands Best Pairs Final under floodlights at Wednesfield.
Coventry riders are in action across the UK this Bank Holiday weekend. Australian star McMillan leads the Coventry challenge in the prestigious Poole Laurels, on the south
coast, whilst a squad of junior riders compete at East Park, Wolverhampton. Joe McLaughlin heads to the Eurovets Grand Prix series, defending his current second place standing.
Newly formed Brandon Bees are next in action on Tuesday evening 16th June, when they tackle Birmingham in the Midland League division 2 at Brandon Road Playing Fields.
