Last updated : 19 September 2014 By Coventry Cycle Speedway

Coventry Cycle Speedway club will be the focus of attention in Coventry City centre on Sunday as they are one of the main attractions at the Sky Ride mass participation cycling event around the ring road.

Various club members and officials will be on hand to display the thrilling sport of Cycle Speedway, where riders compete with opposition teams over multiple heats racing on shale surfaced oval track racing bikes with no brakes and no gears.

Following on from the success of the Cycle Speedway promotion at the Coventry Cycle Festival back in June, the club was delighted to be invited to the event with the potential of spotting some undiscovered talent within the city.

Coventry’s leading home grown rider Myke Grimes, who recently qualified for the 2014 British Final, will be on hand to assist any youngsters who wish to try Cycle Speedway with an army of volunteers.

Bikes are available to use for free of charge with helmets and gloves also provided. A temporary track will be marked out just off Park Street behind the RBS Bank in the city centre; the event will run from 11am until 3pm on Sunday afternoon (21st).

Talented riders will be invited to then try the sport at the international standard Cycle Speedway track at Hearsall Common on any Wednesday evening until mid October and to join the booming Coventry Cycle Speedway club.

In other news, dates have been confirmed for the British Indoor Championships, which will once again be hosted at Ryton Sports Connexion, near Coventry. The annual indoor festival of indoor racing will take place over the first weekend of the New Year (3rd/4th January) and will feature Britain’s best riders.

Vicky Brown will be on track attempting to retain her prestigious Woman’s British indoor title, whilst Oxford based side Horspath are also keen to hold onto their British club championship trophy. The Open Final and the respective age category finals are also set to highlight the weekends racing which can be attended for free of charge.
