Festival Of Cycling Celebrated At Coventry Transport Museum

Coventry Transport Museum have an exhibition this week to celebrate the rich history of cycling in Coventry.

It was a proud history that started in 1869 when Coventry Machinists Company made the first bikes in Coventry.

By 1891, the cycle industry was employing 4059 people in the city, including employees from Singers, who founded Singers Football Club which went on to become Coventry City FC. By 1895 77 companies in Coventry were involved in cycle making all over the city.

Such names back then were Singer, Royal Prince, Triumph, Coventry Herald, Humber, Palmer, Midland Cycle Co, Coventry Cycle Manufacturing Co and Starley Bros and bikes made by them are on view in this well put together exhibition for anyone interested in cycling or the history of Coventry.



A 48 page catalogue and guide is available at £3 and events over the next few days are as follows:



4th June - An Evening with Graeme Obree himself, exhibition by Imagineer 'Godiva Awakes', cycle related activities in the Museum

5th June - Graeme Obree will be at the Festival for part of the day

Cycle Magic - Cycling tryout roadshow with a wide selection of bikes including tandems, tricycles, special needs machines, half size penny farthings and circus bikes.

Rick Shaw rides, Cycle Powered Scalextric, Cycle circus/unicyclists, Roller Racing, BMX/skateboarding display, Slow bike race, Imagineer Godiva Awakes recruitment, Imagineer/Ego drama production, Halfords/Peace House Dr. Bike and bike amnesty, Cycle related activities in the Museum, Stalls, craft activities, face painting etc
