The Giro D'Italia today paid its respects to Wouter Weylandts who tragically was killed on yesterday's third stage.

Despite over forty five minutes of cardiac massage and a number of doctors and medics on site, the Leopard Trek rider never recovered from a horriffying crash which saw him fall twenty metres after clipping a wall with his pedal at 70km an hour.and suffer horrific head injuries as well as evenutally forcing his heart to stop. A Pathologist later announced that Weylandts died instantly and would have suffered no pain.

The shocked peleton decided to continue with a neutralised stage which meant no racing and David Millar (pictured below) who had taken the leaders Maglia Rosa jersey said that he was riding today for Wouter who had won the third stage of the Giro D'Italia last year.

After a minute's silence and the riders wearing black armbands. each team rode for ten kilometres of the 216km stage from Genova Quarto dei Mille to Livorno with Weylandt's Leopard Trek team having the last stint.

Weylandt's best mate Garmin rider Tyler Farrar (pictured below) rode with the Leopard Trek team for the final few kilometres and was in tears as he did so. He announced that he will withdraw from the race tonight and will be going home to Ghent where he was a neighbour of Weylandts and his partner Sophie who is expecting a child later this year.

Stage five tomorrow is from Piombino to Orvieto and is 191km long.
