Impey Wins The Tour Of Alberta

Darryl Impey of Orica Green Edge has won the Tour Of Alberta.

The fifth and final stage was eleven laps of a circuit around Churchill Square in Edmonton in a 124.1 km stage.

A break of three riders than a break of eleven riders tried to get away on the opening lap but were soon back in the peloton.

Orica Green Edge and Giant Shimano both sent two riders onto the front on a wet afternoon and it was one rider from each team in Christain Meier and Georg Preidler, who finally got away.

With a forty second lead, Meier took the first sprint of the day but by the end of lap five, the duo and more four riders have been absorbed back into the peloton.

Twelve riders including Simon Yates the King Of The Mountains leader, formed a new break which was five seconds ahead with 51.4kms to go.

There was a crash on the wet roads which sent two riders down and  Ben Chaddock having to be seen by his team's medical team.

There was now ten riders who started lap eight in front before Steven Kruijswijk of Belkin taking the third sprint.

Kruijswijk took the King Of The Mountains points as well and was ten seconds clear of the chasers and 1.10 ahead of the peloton.

It was all back together with 18.5kms,whilst at the back of the peloton, there was a crash which took down four riders.

There was only fifty riders left with fourteen kilometres left who took on lap ten and then the final lap.

Ramanus Navardauskas, the points leader, led a small group which included Sergei Tvetcov who was also in with a chance of taking the general classification away from Tom Dumoulin of Giant Shimano.

Simon Yates took to the front going into the last mile, working for Darryl Impey who went away to win the stage IN 3.46.23 and win the race overall as thanks to the time bonuses, he beat Tom Dumoulin who had led since the prologue by a single second and eight seconds from Ruben Zepunkte. 

Simon Yates, who won the King Of The Mountains finished 20th.
