Team Sky manager David Brailsford has said that Mark Cavendish can leave Team Sky if he feels it is in his best interests.
Team Sky this year went into the Tour De France with a team built around helping Bradley Wiggins to victory, leaving Cavendish, who had his previous HTC Highroad team geared around him, to work for the team and take what sprints he could.
"If he felt, or if it was felt, that he would like a dedicated team around him, then he is quite within his rights to want to do that," said Brailsford in a interview carried by a number of media outlets including the BBC.
"This team will keep its GC ambitions and I am sure that we will sit down and discuss that with Mark and see how he feels about that.
"He is a prolific British winner and we would love to have a prolific British winner on the team.
Saying what would happen if Cavendish, who is the World Champion and winner of 23 Le Tour stages, did decide that his future lay elsewhere, Brailsford said: "We wouldn't fall out about it. "There wouldn't be an issue about it, but we are very proud to have him on Team Sky. He is a fantastic champion and long may that continue.
Cavendish signed a three year contract back in October.
