Marcel Kittel has won the opening stage of 2014 Tour De France.
Leeds, who had bid £10m to host the Grand Depart, as part of the Yorkshire bid, put on a good job, to ensure that just after 11am, the riders made their way through the massive xrowds on a 190km stage to Harrogate.
The first attack started early with Jens Voigt of Trek Factory racing, the oldest man in the race on the attack with Nicholas Edet and Benoit Jarrier.
As many of the crowd in Leeds spent two hours or more queueing for trains to the finish venue of Harrogate, The trio took a lead which went out to 3.05 after 50km.
Cherel of AG23 crashed in front of crowds on the road and to describe those watching the race on the road side as absolutely massive is an understatement as Voigt led them up the Cote De Cray.
Voigt took those mountain points and then broke clear taking a 1.45 lead which saw him take the maximum sprint points ahead of Jarrier, Edet, Greipel, Sagan, and Cavendish.
The Cote de Buttertubs was next and Voigt made sure he was in the lead of the King Of The Mountain competitions by being first over the summit.
Jarrier was caught with 104kms gone as Voigt, a father of six children, stormed to 3.43 in front of Edet with the peloton some 4.07 behind with 73.8kms left.
Alberto Contador and Tejay Van Garden moved to the front of the peloton before Lotto Belisol decided to work on the front of the peloton which was starting on the Cote De Griton Moor.
Voigt took those points and will be wearing the polka dot jersey in York tomorrow morning and then decided to call it a day and let the peloton catch him.
The battle was on for the last twenty kilometres with Lotto patrolling things down the front along with Nicholas Roche's Tinkoff Saxo team.
Ten kilometres on and this was looking like one for the sprinters.
Astana and Katusha went to the fore. Lotto took over and then Omega Pharma Quick Step battled with Giant Shimano. Cofidis had a sniff but Cavendish's team took to the front.
Under the flam rouge and Voigt went before there was a crash and Cavendish hit the deck and was left holding his right arm with an Orica rider and of Marcel Kittle of Giant Shimano was first over the line in 4.44.07.
