Gianni Meersman of Omega Pharma Quick Step won the Trofeo Platja de Muro in Mallorca.
The fourth race in the Iberostar Challenge 2014 series was another stage for the climbers with four Category 2 climbs on a 160km stage from Muro to Port d'Alcudia.
2012 Tour De France Winner Sir Bradley Wiggins of Team Sky was amongst those taking part but not in the first break of the day which saw Plaza, Landa, Anton, Pauwels, Meier, Van den Broeck, Cardoso, Vigano, Machado and Pel Pino escape after forty one kilometres.
Diego Ullisi bridged and fourteen kilometres later, their lead was at 1.05. The lead of the fourteen riders peaked at 1.16 but with 74kms to go, it was down to less than a minute.
With sixty kilometres remaining, Machado and Plaza attacked, taking an eighteen second lead on what was left of the former break. It was however, an attack destined not to succeed as Team Sky's Ben Swift and Josh Edmondson hunted them down and with 38kms left, the peloton was back together.
Forty five riders got themselves into a first group on the road and got a minute ahead from a second group of around forty riders. Omega Pharma Quick Step had plenty of riders in the first group and the Belgian based side were able to control things on the front going into the last ten kilometres.
This allowed Gianni Meersman to get in front and take Trofeo Platja de Muro victory beating Ventoso, Team Sky's Ben Swift, Sacha Modolo, Gavazzi, Edvald Boasson Hagen, Michael Albasini, Chernetsky, Pichot and Wegmann
