Joaquim Rodrique of Katuasha won the Il Lombardia
The Il Lombardia (Giro di Lombardia or Tour of Lombardy) is the penultimate round of the 2013 World Tour and on its 242km route, there were five climbs including the Muro di Sormano which has leg shattering gradients of up to 27%.
2013 Tour De France winner Chris Froom was one of those not starting the race in the rain. It was a race that saw the peloton pretty much together until Albasini, De Marchi and Felline attacked with 46kms gone.
They took a maximum of 3.10 before being joined by Hollenstein, Quintero & Wauters after Peter Sagan had abandoned.
The break trimmed down to four after Albasini and Felline have been dropped but with 105kms to go, their time on the front was over.
Nicholas Roche got himself into a group of 21 riders, who avoided a crash which took down Vincenzo Nibali just before the Muro di Sormano climb which saw the peloton spread all over the road.
One rider who was not affected by this climb was Europcar's Tommy Voeckler who charged away and had a lead of 2.20 with 53kms to go.
Heading towards Lake Como, Voeckler started to grimace and on the lower slopes of the Villa Vergano, AG2R's Mickaël Chérel caught him, dragging what remanined of the peloton with him.
That peloton contained some big names, Alberto Contador may have been dropped but Quintana, Valverde, Rodriguez, Ivan Basso and Garmin-Sharp's Birmingham born Irishman Daniel Martin were all there.
FDJ's Thibaut Pinot and AG2R's Domenico Pozzovivo attacked on the final climb. Joaquim Rodriquez, caught and burst past the duo and no-one was going to stop him.
Rodriquez had won the race in 2012 and he duly completed his second successive victory by crossing the line in a time of 6.10.18.
